I recently moved into a house with some really worn-out cabinets. The wood is in pretty bad shape because the previous owner painted over it without any primer, making it look worse. Initially, I considered replacing them entirely with new cabinets, but now that my wife and I just got married, we've spent all our savings on the wedding. So, I'm looking for a cheaper fix. Would it be possible to add nice-looking plywood to the larger sections and cover the old face frame with a new one? Will this approach look decent or just end up terrible?

You might want to consider cabinet refacing instead. If you can smooth out the surfaces and get rid of that paint, using PSA veneer can give you some great results. Then you could use 1/4" plywood for the ends along with some new trim, and that could really spruce things up!
Adding a second face frame could mess things up with your hinges and drawer slides, plus you'd lose some counter overhang. You might be able to manage with 1/4" overlays, but I think using veneer would give you the best finish overall.
Good point! I’m planning to redo the drawers and doors too, not to mention new countertops eventually, so I’ll keep that in mind.

That sounds like a solid plan! I’ll definitely look into getting the paint off with some effort.
