Hey there! I'm in the process of setting up my new home, which is connected to city water with a hardness level of 18 grains. There are five of us living here, and I'm trying to decide between water softeners with a capacity of 40,000 grains and 60,000 grains. I know that the main difference lies in how often they regenerate, but I'm a bit confused. Isn't it okay to set the smaller unit to regenerate more frequently at night? Wouldn't that use about the same amount of salt and water overall if our usage stays the same? And which one would you personally recommend? Thanks for your help!

If you're on city water, the size of your softener can impact your water bill due to the amount of water used during regeneration. While the 40k unit may cost less and regenerate more frequently, you might end up using more water overall due to those extra cycles. It's actually cheaper in the long run to go for the larger 60k model, as it will regenerate less often and save water.

How does it actually affect my water bill, though?
