Is It Safe to Remove This Roof Joist?

I've been working with my dad to install a range hood above our stove because my mom's cooking creates a lot of grease in the kitchen. While cutting into the attic, we found a wooden support beam right above the stove. We added a sister joist for extra support, but since we need a bigger hole, we're considering cutting the existing beam. Does this support beam look crucial to the structure? There's nothing hanging from it in the kitchen, so it doesn't seem to bear any weight from there. Any advice would be appreciated!

It's great that you added a sister joist, but cutting that beam without advice from a structural engineer might not be the best idea. If it's supporting walls against the weight of the roof, you might run into trouble. Just to be safe, consider getting a pro to take a look before you make any cuts.

It looks like you've already cut into it, and the sister joist alone isn't providing full support. A proper sistered joist should run the entire length of the original. Consider using headers to support the cut ends. If you've got access to building codes, check figure R804.3.5—they show a good way to handle situations like this!

From what I can see, that beam might not be holding much directly, but it's likely keeping the walls from bowing out. Cutting it could lead to some structural issues down the line. It would be better to reinforce the joists if you're determined to cut it. Maybe add some braces to the nearest trusses for extra support? Just keep in mind that maintaining structural integrity is key!
