I'm considering the Dewalt DWS780 miter saw because there's a deal that seems great. I've heard it's one of the best models out there. However, I currently have a cheap miter saw that I use only a couple of times a year for smaller projects. While it gets the job done for my trim work, I'm thinking ahead since we own rental properties and my wife often comes up with 'projects'. I'm torn between getting this high-quality saw that could last me decades and sticking with my less reliable option. Do you think the DWS780 is worth the $500 price tag for someone like me? I don't want to overspend if it's not really needed, especially as my wife jokingly suggested that I'm just looking for excuses to take on new projects!

Honestly, you don't need that specific model unless you're planning to do a lot of heavy-duty work. There are plenty of good 10" saws that are lighter and just as effective for DIY corner trim and smaller wood projects. If you're just a weekend warrior and aren't hauling it around all the time, maybe consider a more compact model or a solid 10" sliding saw instead. It'll still get the job done without taking up as much space or being so hefty.
I have to agree with others that this saw might be overkill for your needs. If you're not using it regularly and mostly for small projects, a lower-cost model could suffice. Plus, once you own it, you'll find reasons to use it more often! But, if you know for sure you'll be taking on heavier projects in the future, the DWS780 could be a great investment that ultimately pays for itself by making your tasks easier and more enjoyable. Just think about how much you'd spend hiring a pro for what you want to do!
It really depends on what projects you plan on tackling! If you're doing finish carpentry or major renovations, a high-quality saw like the DWS780 can definitely add precision to your work. That said, if you're mainly tackling small DIY projects here and there, your current saw might still do the trick. Just keep in mind that the Dewalt will last you a long time and could save you money in the long run by allowing you to handle more complex tasks yourself. I say if you can afford it, go for it—tools can make a huge difference in your work quality!
