How to Make My Garden More Damp for Gunnera Manicata?

I'm really passionate about large-leaf plants and I'm looking to add a Gunnera manicata to my garden. However, I've heard they need damp soil or a lot of water to thrive. I'm wondering if anyone has creative ideas for keeping part of my garden damp without having to constantly water it, especially during the hot summer months. I was thinking about burying a tarp deep in the soil to retain moisture and also adding heavy mulch to limit evaporation. Any advice or techniques that could help?

There's a tried-and-true method you could follow: dig a square hole about 1.2m on each side and 600mm deep. Line the bottom with a butyl liner to hold water about 250mm deep, allowing excess to overflow from the edges. Place slanted drain pipes in the corners for access, fill with stones, and then add your soil layers before planting the Gunnera. This way, the plant can adjust its water intake, and you just have to keep an eye on the water level in the pipes.
