Is it okay to drill into ductwork while finishing a basement?

I'm new to construction stuff, but I just started a basement finishing project that costs a lot of money. I noticed the framer drilled metal framing directly into the ductwork. I asked the field manager if that was okay, and he said it is since they used small screws. I'm not sure if I can trust that, so I'm looking for some advice. Can someone clarify if that's the right approach or if they might be cutting corners?

Nope, it’s not a good idea to attach framing to ductwork at all. Doing this can cause issues with airflow and might even damage the ducts. It’s best to keep them separate to ensure everything runs smoothly. You should definitely raise your concerns with your contractor.

Exactly! Ducts are usually just thin aluminum and not meant to hold weight. It’s better to be safe and have them fix it.

I agree with the others. In a residential remodel, the framing should not be drilled into the ductwork. It's crucial to maintain the integrity of both the framing and the duct system. If you're worried, ask for a second opinion from another contractor just to be sure.
