I'm building some raised garden beds using 4x4s for the corners and 1x4s for the walls. I've been using 1 and 1/4" wood screws, but they don't seem to hold well. Would switching to 1 and 1/2" screws be sufficient?

Typically, you want your screws to be about three times the thickness of the material you're fastening. Since your 1x4s are actually around 3/4" thick, going with screws that are 1 and 1/2" to 2 and 1/4" would be a solid choice. But since it's just for garden beds, you can get away with a bit less if you want.
