Can I Install 14″ Windows Vertically Instead of Horizontally?

I'm planning to add a couple of windows to my garage as I'm converting part of it into a home office. Ideally, I want to install these 14" wide windows vertically between the studs without cutting any load-bearing ones. However, most 14" windows I find are designed for horizontal installation. Has anyone had experience with this or can suggest a solution?

To avoid any leaks, stick with the way the windows are meant to be installed. Those drainage channels will just end up being ineffective if you flip the windows. You can also check directly with manufacturers to see if they offer any suitable vertical window options that match your needed dimensions.

That’s a good point! Direct ordering might actually get you the exact size you need without the hassle of modifying the space.

Yeah, if you can find the right size, that’s definitely the way to go.

Installing those 14" windows vertically isn't the best idea. They're designed with weep holes and seals that function only when they're installed horizontally. If you do try to install them the other way, they may leak, which could lead to more issues down the line. It might be easier to modify the area a bit—cutting a stud and putting in headers could open up space for a wider window like a 30-inch model, which is generally more standard and off-the-shelf.

It's definitely a better option to get something that’s designed to be installed vertically if you're really committed to that route.

Yeah, exactly. Plus, modifying the framing is often more straightforward than dealing with potential leaks down the road.
