I've got a 100-year-old pine floor that's developed some splintery areas, especially along the edges and gaps between the boards. A flooring professional recommended either sanding and repairing the floor or covering it with LVL. My main concern is safety since my kids have gotten splinters before. The floor was sanded and finished professionally four years ago, so I'm hesitant to spend a lot on sanding again if it's just going to happen again. I really don't want to cover it up with LVL because it would take away some of the character of my home. Is there any matte tape I could use to cover these splintery spots that's discreet and won't stand out too much?

Are the gaps really that bad? You might want to consider applying a top coat of clear finish to seal off the splinters. It’s odd if that hasn’t already been done after a professional job. Also, targeting the worst spots with some epoxy could really help lock everything down.
I see that the Bona finish looked nice, but it often needs maintenance. How are the gaps holding up nowadays?
You might want to check out some clear edge protection films, like the Lamin-x stuff. It could provide a smooth layer over those splintery spots without being too noticeable. That could be a good temporary fix until you decide on a more permanent solution.
