What to Do if All the Brown Paper is Gone on Your Drywall?

I found a spot where the brown paper on my drywall is completely gone, leaving the gypsum core exposed. I've seen lots of repair videos, but they all assume the brown paper is still intact. Also, is it normal for gypsum to be quite hard?

It sounds like what you're dealing with might actually be plaster instead of drywall. The lack of visible drywall screws suggests it’s plaster, which was more common in older constructions. Your gypsum core being hard is typical—plaster can be quite solid. You might need to use a different repair technique, as repairing plaster can differ from drywall fixes.

Yeah, I've had similar issues before. If it is indeed plaster, you might want to look up some plaster repair methods—they usually involve a different approach than drywall patches.
