What’s the Best Finish for My Treated Pine and Cedar Workbench?

I recently built a workbench using treated pine and cedar sourced from scrap wood. I'm looking for a durable finish that can withstand damage from tools like screwdrivers, drills, saws, and hammers. I'm planning to stain it first with a combination of used motor oil and diesel. What type of finish would you recommend? Would varnish or polyurethane work well? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you want some decent protection, I’d suggest using oil finishes. They penetrate the wood and provide some natural protection while preserving the beauty of the grain. Just keep in mind that you'll need to reapply it every now and then, especially if it’s going to be outside, even if it’s under cover. Waxing can also help, but be aware it won't last as long as oil or varnish. Personally, I wouldn't put a heavy finish on it, but that's just me.

I hear you on wanting to protect your workbench! Polyurethane is a solid option since it forms a tough layer over the wood. If you're prepping with oil and diesel, it might be fine, but make sure it's fully cured before applying poly. Just be aware that this will give you a more glossy finish, which may not be everyone's cup of tea. You just want that balance between protection and maintaining the look of your wood.
