I've been trying my hand at gardening, but it's been a bit disheartening. I planted some crocuses and worked really hard to dig up the tough clay soil. They bloomed briefly, but then squirrels came along and ate them! I see tulip leaves coming up, but some of those have already been nibbled too. I'm looking into flowers that squirrels typically don't eat, but so far, nothing has caught my eye. I just want to know, if the squirrels have eaten my crocuses this year, will they still return next year?

It's tough with clay soil since bulbs can struggle to grow, even without squirrels digging them up. If you decide to replant them, try enriching the soil with compost and group the bulbs together. Cover them with some chicken wire to keep those pesky squirrels away. Using blood meal can also help deter them and other animals, just remember to reapply it while the flowers are growing!
Oh, they'll definitely be back! Squirrels seem to have a way of making sure flowers grow in surprising places, even if they munch on them first. Just wait and see!

I might give that blood meal a shot, but does it attract mice? It sounds a bit iffy. Also, I mixed crushed leaves with the gardening soil when I replanted, but I had taken the chicken wire off after winter. Should I have kept it on longer?
