DIY Self-Retracting Hose Reel Ideas?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to create a self-retracting hose reel for my 1.25" hose that I currently just hang on a hook above my workbench. I've previously built a hand-crank reel for a 2" hose under my bandsaw, but that kind of setup wouldn't work for the space I have. Since I'm having trouble finding good diagrams or information on how these spring-loaded systems operate, I would love to hear any input or advice on building one. I also have a friend with a 3D printer who can help with parts like a ratcheting system if needed. Any thoughts?

Totally get your determination! Just be careful if you want to go the DIY route. If you're not experienced with these mechanisms, they can be tricky and even a bit dangerous. While 3D printing could work for some components, I would suggest making sure you can secure the metal parts safely. Have you thought about hitting up local tool rental stores or checking online marketplaces for used reels that might fit your needs instead?

I get where you're coming from! Just a heads-up, while making a DIY reel sounds like a fun challenge, you might want to consider how those mechanisms work. They usually have a ratchet stop and coil a spring as you pull the hose out. The tricky part is that the critical components like springs and the wheel have to be metal, and those are often purpose-built parts. Sourcing the right parts could end up costing more in time and money than just buying a pre-made one, especially since safety is a concern with spring-loaded devices!
