I just bought some basil from the store and tried to grow it in soil, but it started dying right away. I moved it to a window, thinking it might be getting too much light from my grow lamp. Now I'm wondering if there's a way to save it, or if I should just throw it away. Also, if I do need to discard it, can I reuse the soil?

It's tough to tell from the picture if there's any new growth at the base of the stems. If you see any signs of life, you might be able to save it. I’d suggest cutting back the bare stems. Watering from the bottom usually works better for me—get a pot with a hole, place it in a larger container with water, and keep it just touching the bottom. This way, the soil doesn't get soaked! By the way, I’ve had success transplanting grocery store basil into my garden, but the store-bought ones aren’t as tough as those from garden centers.
If your basil is just in a container, try putting it in water to help it grow roots before planting it in soil. It might perk up!
So should I take it out of the soil?
Glad it's not just me who struggles with basil indoors! I always find it thrives outside, but inside it's a whole different story. I usually buy it for pesto or to top my homemade pizzas; fresh basil makes such a difference!
