I'm thinking about starting my gardening journey with an Orange Dream Acer, but I have zero experience besides just watering plants. I've always admired my dad's Japanese red maple Acer, but it recently died, so I want to try my hand at a few different Acer varieties. Any advice on how to begin?

First off, think about where you want to plant it—Acers have specific light needs and prefer partial shade. Check your soil type too, especially if you’re planting it in the ground. Acers love acidic soil, so if you're unsure, using a pot with ericaceous compost can help. And just a heads up, you might feel a bit shocked at the prices when you hit up the garden center! Once you’ve got it home, plant it or leave it in the pot and give it some time to settle in.
Good call on starting with an Acer! They don't typically harm pets, which is a bonus. Just remember, they thrive in acidic soil, so if you’re using regular garden soil, mix in some ericaceous compost to keep it happy. Aim for a spot that’s sheltered from strong winds and not in direct midday sun—Acers dislike harsh conditions!
