It seems like your options might be limited. If visibility is a priority, you might want to consider removing the stairs altogether if they’re in the way. Just keep in mind how you'll access the basement without them!
I agree, but removing them entirely doesn't sound practical. You need some way to get to the basement. Maybe consider other styles instead of just getting rid of them.
Good point, I think I need to keep some stairs for access to the basement, just looking for the best configuration.
