I'm new to gardening and trying to bottom water my starter cells. I placed my cell tray in a water tray, but noticed that the soil started to float. Should I be concerned about this? Will the soil eventually settle down as it absorbs water, or is it better to start with less water in the tray? I had about an inch of water, and this is my first attempt at starting seeds indoors.

When bottom watering, it’s normal for soil to float at first, especially if it's dry. As it absorbs water, it should settle down. Next time, try pre-soaking your potting mix before filling your cells—it'll help with this issue. Just remember not to put too much water in the tray; about half an inch to an inch is usually good. I’ve used warm water for my plants, and it seems to soak better. But be cautious if your seeds are already in the cells. For the future, just remember to water the mix before you start. Once you bottom water after that, it should work just fine!
