How Do I Start My Gardening Journey With 22,000 Seeds?

I'm new to gardening and decided to buy seeds to grow my own herbs and veggies. However, I ended up with a whopping 22,000 seeds! Here's my list of what I purchased, marking the ones I use often with asterisks and the ones I don't know about with pound signs. I'm living in a zone 7/8 area, and I've got clay soil, so I need advice on what I can start indoors that's safe for my cats and how to prepare my soil. How do I get started without feeling overwhelmed? Can I plant certain seeds together? Like, will mint influence the taste of my basil? I'd like to get going with the herbs but don't know where to begin. Thanks for any help!

You’ve got a great opportunity ahead of you! I’d recommend starting with a plan for your garden layout. In your zone, it’s essential to know when to plant your seeds. Direct sowing them outdoors can save you space inside. Focus on creating a good outdoor space first, especially if you want to grow peppers and tomatoes, as they usually need some extra warmth. Remember, some herbs—like mint—can spread quickly, so keep them contained!

Thanks! I plan to focus on herbs and maybe a few peppers and tomatoes this year. Can’t wait to make my own sauce and salsa!

It's fantastic that you're diving into gardening! I recommend creating a spreadsheet to track your seeds: include when to plant, how deep, and spacing. This can really help in organizing your garden. And for that clay soil, you might want to add compost or use some mulch to improve the quality. For compost, check local community gardens or see if you can buy it from nearby stores. You’ve got a lot to explore, so focus on having fun!

Spreadsheets are my jam! I’ll definitely start on that. Thanks for the compost suggestions!

Hey, that’s a crazy amount of seeds! No worries, though—it’s all about taking it one step at a time. You might want to start by building a raised bed or two. They’re great for your zone, and you can plant most of what you have there once you set it up. Get some seed trays and a grow light to start your seeds indoors. It'll cost you about $35, and then you can look up specific planting instructions for the herbs and veggies you’re excited about!

Thanks for the tips! I'll definitely check out those options.
