I noticed that solder pots are priced around $35-40 CAD on Amazon, but the lead-free solder bars needed to fill even a small one (like 500g) cost at least double that. Since I mainly need the solder pot for desoldering through-hole components from PCBs, is there any reason I can't just put a chunk of metal, like steel, in the pot to take up space and use less solder? Would a specific metal, such as brass or copper, work better for this purpose?

Using a metal filler could work, but keep in mind that steel may float on lead-free solder because it's less dense than lead. You'd need to secure it somehow so it doesn't interfere with your desoldering. Maybe consider a method like magnets, although they can lose strength at high temperatures. Creative thinking could just get you the solution you need!
It’s definitely worth shopping around for solder pots. I found that different models require varying amounts of solder, which can really affect your costs. I ended up getting an Antex Soldip Major, and despite doing all my research to minimize filling costs, it came pre-filled! So, double-check the specifics before you commit.
