I'm planning to top dress and overseed my backyard, but I'm worried about birds stealing the seeds. Does anyone have any tips on deterring them? Also, is it still a good time to start this process?

You should definitely go for it! It's getting warmer, so grass will start growing better soon, unless you're in a colder area. To keep pigeons away, try raking and rolling the seed into the soil; you’ll lose some to the birds, but this will help. I also tried tying ribbons to stakes around the yard, which worked okay when it was windy, but didn’t do much in still weather!

A giant scarecrow could be fun—imagine the neighbors' faces! But seriously, you're going to lose some seeds no matter what. Just make sure to trample the seeds into the soil for better contact, and keep them watered. If you're interested in additional measures, there's bird netting available, although that may be pricey depending on your yard size.
Thanks! Netting won't work for my wide area, but I might try one of those fake birds on a fishing line.
