Hey everyone! I had an electrician check out an outlet at my place and he found that my breaker box is pretty outdated and unsafe. He said I need to get it replaced soon. Here's the kicker: he mentioned that because the regulations have changed since my house was built in 1978, I'll also need to dig up and replace the power cable that runs from the transformer to my house. Apparently, it has to be inside a protective pipe now, unlike the loose cable that's currently there. The trench they'd have to dig is about 60 feet long and 3 feet deep, and the estimate for all this work came out to around $14,000! Ouch! I plan on getting a couple more quotes, but I wanted to know if anyone else has faced something similar?

That sounds like a serious job! It’s good you’re getting multiple quotes because sometimes there are alternatives to major excavations. Chatting with your local building inspector could also help—there might be less expensive ways to meet those regulations, or you could find out if there are any grandfather clauses. Really hope those next opinions help you out!
Before you jump in, could you upload some pics of your breaker panel? There are certain brands like Zinsco and Federal Pacific that really should be swapped out fast due to fire hazards. It's possible you’re dealing with someone who’s inflating costs, too. Definitely get other opinions, including from a reputable contractor. You could be charged way more than you need if this is a case of upselling.
It's not uncommon to run into code updates when dealing with electrical work. It might be worth contacting your local code enforcement to get their take without mentioning the safety aspect just yet. I upgraded my box for similar reasons—totally makes sense given how many gadgets we have nowadays. Just to clarify, when they say they need to replace the cable, is it because of the way it’s currently installed? Yeah, that’s what the electrician said. He mentioned that when they replace the box, the whole underground cable has to go too. It all seems a bit much to me; I’m definitely gonna get some other quotes to see what they say!
I’ve got a Zinsco panel, so I get why it needs to be replaced. But wow, this whole trench and cable replacement thing is a shocker!
