I'm thinking about planting grapevines in containers and training them along a fence. Since I'm renting my property, I want to know how much I can cut back the grape plants if I need to move them. Can I trim them down significantly to make transport easier, or should I just take cuttings instead?

It's totally fine to cut back grapevines pretty drastically! They usually grow new shoots in the spring, and that's where the fruit will come from. I prune mine hard every winter, just keeping the basic structure intact. Once, I moved some old Concord grapes by cutting them back to basically stumps, and they bounced right back by the end of the season. You wouldn't even know they were pruned so severely!
Thanks! Do they need to be fully dormant for that kind of severe pruning? If I did it in the growing season, would it harm the plant?
