What’s the Best Way to Find a Good Contractor for Small Jobs?

I've been trying to find a contractor for a small job—just a powder room and kitchen update—but I've had a rough time. I started with one contractor who couldn't take it on due to insurance issues, and now the second guy has been taking weeks just to give me an estimate. I'm in Toronto, Canada, and I know contractors are busy, especially with bigger jobs. I'm pretty handy but there are aspects of this project, like a tricky floor and wall, that I can't handle on my own. I'm curious about how others go about finding reliable handymen for smaller renovations. Any tips?

It's definitely not easy! I spent quite a bit of time looking for mine. I tapped into online resources (though some aren't that helpful) and even asked around my neighborhood. You’ll be surprised how much you can learn from talking with contractors—they may share insights you hadn't considered. Just stick with it, and don’t lose hope. Finding someone who respects your questions and is upfront with their info is key!

Finding a good contractor can really be a challenge! With demand so high, it's no surprise that you’re not getting quick replies. One tip I've found effective is to visit local hardware stores—contractors often hang out there looking for jobs. You can even post your project on platforms like Facebook Marketplace, but be cautious about who you hire to avoid surprises like poor-quality work and unexpected costs.
