I just picked up a 74x37x1.5 inch walnut butcher block countertop for a desk I'm building, but it's unfinished. I don't have much experience with finishing wood, mainly just basic staining. I'm unsure about the best way to finish this butcher block since it was a bit pricey, and I want to make sure I do it right. I've heard about oil, wax, and polyurethane, but I could really use some advice on which would be the best option with the least maintenance. Any recommendations or resources would be super helpful! Using a good polyurethane can give you a really durable finish. I recommend trying a wipe-on poly since it's generally easier to apply than brushing it on. Just be sure to apply it carefully for the best results!
I’d suggest General Finishes Arm R Seal. It's perfect for walnut and enhances its natural luster while protecting it really well. I always use it for surfaces that get a lot of wear, like desks. It might be a bit pricier, but it’s worth it! Apply three coats, using less product with each, and sand in between. For a nice finish after the last coat, rub it down with a piece of brown paper bag.
Do you prefer the satin, semigloss, or gloss finish?
If you go with polyurethane, General Finishes High Performance is a solid choice. It's definitely superior compared to many big box brands.
