I'm dealing with a bit of a quirky problem in my home HVAC system. The builder decided to use three different air filter sizes, and one of them is really tough to find: 16 x 36 x 1. I found some filters from Home Depot, but they're not available anymore. I can get them on Amazon and other sites, but they cost a lot due to their rarity. I'm wondering if it would work to stack two filters, like a 16x16 and a 16x20, to create the equivalent size I need. Has anyone tried this approach? Is it a bad idea? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Honestly, I’d suggest just ordering the right filters online. I found some suppliers that sell the 16x36x1 filters, and you might want to buy in bulk to save some cash. Changing your return-air grille to a more standard size could also save you hassle in the future.
Stacking two different size filters could work, but it might slightly reduce airflow because of the filter borders. It's not the best option, but it shouldn't be catastrophic. Have you thought about getting washable or permanent filters instead?
