Are $75 Each for 240W Lifeline Solar Panels a Good Deal?

I spotted a local seller offering 20 Lifeline solar panels from 2010 for $75 each. I'm planning to set up multiple panels combined with a battery to help reduce my electricity usage. Since my area doesn't have net metering, I want to avoid the complexities and costs associated with grid-tied systems. I'm considering getting around 8 of these 240W panels (with a 37V open circuit voltage). I need to check what permits I might need, but I'm pretty sure it's just local building inspectors I have to deal with, since doing electrical work is generally straightforward here. I'll also need to sort out mounting hardware for the roof or ground.

Honestly, just skip these. By the time you factor in all the extra racking, wiring, and mounting hardware you need, you’d be better off investing in fewer new panels that will last longer.

That's too much, in my opinion. I recently bought a load of brand new 350 Watt panels for only 22 cents per watt, and they come with a warranty. Also, keep in mind that older panels might not meet current fire safety standards, which could be a problem for permitted installations. Make sure they have the right safety ratings for your roof!

Honestly, it sounds like you're getting ripped off here. Used panels like that should be valued at about $20 to $30 at most. If they’re low-power, you’re looking at 10 to 15 cents per watt. There are way better deals out there!

Thanks for confirming! I thought the price was too high. I'll keep searching for better options.

I bought used panels similar to those for about a third of that price. I've come across even cheaper options since then. You might want to shop around more before committing to these.

Considering the age of those panels, I'd say a fair price would be around 10 to 15 cents per watt. You can actually find new 325W panels for just $79 each, so the price for these older ones seems a bit steep. Nowadays, even 400W panels are commonly available for about $150.
