I've got a bit of a gardening dilemma! I love tending to my flower pots, but my neighbor's cat keeps using them as a litter box, and it's driving me nuts. I've tried using various scents like mint oil and vinegar, but nothing seems to work. Currently, I've moved some pots into the garage because I just can't deal with it. I've also attempted putting bamboo rods in the pots, but they look terrible and the cat's still pooping on the plastic grass. My neighbors have been nice about it and have told me they try to scare their cat away, but since I can't constantly monitor things, it hasn't made much of a difference. I'm pondering building some bamboo screening, but I'm not sure it would stop the cat in the front yard where it's more open. I really want to enjoy my garden without constantly cleaning up cat poop. Plus, I have a new indoor rabbit that I'd like to let outside safely when it gets warmer. I'm looking for practical tips to keep this cat away without harming it. Any ideas?

One solution I’ve found really effective is to install a cat-proof fence that angles outwards. Cats find it hard to jump over those. Also, keep up your spraying game! I’ve used water sprays before, and they work pretty well to keep them away. If you think you might want to get a dog in the future, they can often help with these kinds of issues too!
Have you tried burrowing some chicken wire just under the topsoil? It helps stop cats from digging, and they really don’t like it. Just make sure the sharp side is facing up. You could also try sprinkling some garlic or chili powder around; that's another deterrent that might help!

I totally get your frustration! One thing that has worked for me is covering the soil with something prickly, like holly or even just bushy plant cuttings. Cats are not fans of anything that pokes them, so that might deter them. As for the artificial grass, it’s odd they’d use that, but maybe try to provide a better alternative for the cat if you can, like a designated area for them to do their business.

I like the idea of the angled fence, but I’m renting, so I don't think that's an option for me. I’ll keep trying to spray, though! And yes, a dog would definitely be a game-changer when I have my own place!
