I'm excited that my town is finally putting in sidewalks along Route 1, which means there will be some little grass strips by the road. If hypothetically, someone were to do a bit of guerrilla gardening there, what flowering bulbs can thrive despite being exposed to road salt, sand, grime, and oil? This is for an area in coastal Rhode Island.

Scilla, like the striped squil, is a solid choice for those conditions. Snowdrops can also work well since they're small, die back before the first mowing, and come back each year. Grape hyacinth might be an option, but I'm not sure if their foliage needs longer to die back. Scilla is quite affordable and tends to multiply too!
Thanks for the tips! I'll have to keep an eye on my grape hyacinths to see how they do with the mowing schedule. I'm a bit hesitant about propagating them since they can be invasive in some areas, though not in my state at the moment. I might also look into mertensia since it's native and should handle the conditions well!
