How to Build a DIY LED Ring Light for a Stereomicroscope?

I'm looking to create a DIY LED ring light for my stereomicroscope. While there are options available for purchase, the ones I found online don't provide enough information on the LED specifications, and the quality brands are quite pricey. Plus, I believe this project would be a great way to pick up some new skills! Here's my plan:

- I'm planning to use 21 SMD LEDs, configured with 3 in series and 7 parallel setups.
- A 20W power supply is part of my plan.
- I intend to include a 0-10V potentiometer for the power supply control.
- I'll be designing a 3D-printed case for it.
- I also want to create a custom PCB for soldering the SMDs.

Here are my specific questions:
1. Are the LEDs I've chosen sufficient for this application, or might they be too powerful?
2. Should I consider using a 24V power supply in conjunction with a booster?
3. Is it realistic for someone with little soldering experience to solder SMDs onto a PCB? I couldn't find THT LEDs that met my criteria in CRI rating, color temperature, brightness, and radiation angle.
4. Would going with an aluminum PCB help with heat regulation, and is it necessary?

I'd appreciate any thoughts or additional suggestions!

Starting off, definitely check the LED data sheets to get a solid grasp of the color and power choices you have. If you're opting for a PCB, it helps to have some CAD experience, but you can always learn as you go! When it comes to soldering, hand-soldering SMT parts is totally doable; I usually stick to 1206 packages myself.

A 1206 LED can typically handle about 60-70mW; considering 21 LEDs will collectively draw around 1.5 watts at max—so a little 20W power supply will more than cover it. Just don’t crank the voltage down to zero; LEDs need around 3V to light up, so keep that in mind while setting your potentiometer. Also, adding an ON/OFF switch is a great idea for convenience!

Thanks for your insights! I did some research on the SMD LEDs I picked, and I found that the 5000K-6000K range is preferred for color accuracy, which is crucial for insect details in entomology.

I get what you're saying about the PCB and soldering. The SMDs I chose are a bit larger than 1206, but can I still handle them with basic skills? Would using higher current than recommended (0.91W based on the specs) truly shorten their lifespan?

And regarding the brightness and voltage, you've mentioned that LEDs need about 3V to work; does that mean I’ll need to ensure my PWM set up correctly with the potentiometer? I plan to include that ON/OFF switch!
