Best Way to Fence a Large Yard for Dogs?

I'm looking for advice on how to fence my large yard, which is about 1.5 acres with a funky shape—around a 400-450' perimeter. I want to create a safe space for my dogs to run around. My plan is to fence the entire yard, but my budget buddy prefers just fencing half an acre closer to the house, where we also have an existing garden. He's suggested using 6' weld wire and t-posts for a DIY project that would cost between $2,000-$2,500 for a smaller area.

I see the benefits of a ball field closer to the house, but I'm worried about making the best choice since we might have to live with this fence for years. I've checked with neighbors about their wooden fence on one side, but not sure if they'd let us tie into it. All I know is I want to keep the dogs safe without going for the expensive invisible fence options. Anyone have thoughts or experiences that could help guide us? What would you do in my position?

If you're considering alternate fencing, maybe check out using cattle panels instead of just weld wire and T-posts. It could be a step up in sturdiness and aesthetics, but keep in mind it could involve more work setting it up, like concreting the posts. However, it’s definitely a good option if you ever want to adjust your fencing in the future. And I love the phrase about being 'allergic to leashes'—that's a good one! ?

Your price estimate does seem a bit on the high side. You might want to look at some local farm and ranch supply stores instead of Home Depot or Lowe’s, as their prices can be much steeper. Just as a reference, we spent about $10,000 to fence a 7-acre area with 3 sides barbed wire and one side welded wire. You may find better deals out there if you shop around!

Good point! The prices can truly vary. I was quoted $105 for a 50' roll of welded wire, but I might have to drive further to find better prices. Seems like some local places really know how to list their items! Definitely gonna look into it.
