I'm planning to build a copy of the Ikea Trofast storage shelf for my kid's closet. I want a clear finish, possibly Polycrylic, instead of paint or stain. This is my first time working with quality plywood, and I expect to need about 1.5 sheets. I've checked out Birch plywood at Home Depot and Menards, but the veneer looks thin and I'm not too confident about it. Home Depot has a Radiata Pine sheet that looks nice, with no knots or thin veneer, and I've come across some positive reviews. Alternatively, a local hardwood dealer offers real Baltic Birch for $100 per sheet. I'm leaning towards the Radiata from Home Depot to save money, but I'm worried if this decision is a mistake. Will I regret going this route?

In my opinion, Radiata is not the best for furniture projects. I typically reserve it for shop projects. Make sure to check out the plywood in-store and inspect both sides carefully. As for the veneer on the hardwood plywood from Home Depot, it shouldn't be an issue.
I snapped some pictures of what was available in my local stores. To my untrained eye, the Radiata seemed like a superior product overall. Just to be thorough, I didn’t get a chance to inspect both sides though.
