Can I Build a Trap-Door for My Metal Rat Cage?

My rat cage's roof broke, so I'm currently using a piece of wood as a temporary cover. Instead of just making a permanent roof, I thought about creating a trap-door to access the cage from the top. However, I'm not sure if this is feasible since the cage has metal bars and a traditional hinge won't work. I wanted to ask if anyone has ideas for how I could pull this off before I give up and just stick with a standard roof.

If you really want to give it a shot, I believe it can be done! You might want to check out how hinges work on a crate door; you could possibly bend some wire to create similar hinges. That way, you can make it work with the metal bars while keeping it functional. Definitely share some pics when you get a chance!

Have you considered using a small soldering iron and some matching gauge rods? You could craft a custom trap-door with some small rings. It'll take a bit of finesse, but it could definitely work for your cage!
