Hey everyone! My front and back yards are really shaded because of nearby trees, and as a result, I've got little to no grass growing. I'm thinking about planting some grass seed, but I'm not sure which type to choose or how to get it to grow well in these extremely shaded areas. For shaded areas, I’ve had success with Pachysandra as a ground cover. It thrives in shade and could be a worthwhile alternative if grass isn’t working out for you. Just a thought!
Grass typically thrives in full sunlight, so growing it in heavy shade can be a challenge. There are a few shade-tolerant ornamental plants, but if you're set on grass, be prepared for some tough work with potentially minimal results. Think of it like trying to grow lavender in wet soil—it might survive for a while, but it'll likely struggle. Instead, consider going for a hardy ground cover that can handle shady conditions better; it’ll look so much nicer than grass that’s barely making it.
I hear you! I also have a yard that’s mostly shaded, and while it’s tough, you can still get grass to grow if you're dedicated. I recommend planting in the fall or early spring and then overseeding as the trees start to bloom. Fine fescue works great for a better-looking lawn, or go with K-31 if you want something more straightforward. It might be challenging, but don’t give up!
