Honestly, spending $5K might not even get you a decent upgrade. I’d suggest fixing the board for $1K and saving your money for a future upgrade, like a heat pump if that's in your plans.
Think about how long you plan to stay in your house. If it's not that long, it might not be worth the investment in a new furnace. And if you have high gas bills, a new, more efficient furnace might actually save you money in the long run.
Check the model number on RepairClinic! The control board could be more affordable than you think—around $125, and you can probably install it yourself in about 20 minutes. Just take one wire off at a time to avoid confusion. I did this, and it saved me a ton of cash instead of paying someone else to do it.
