Hey everyone! I recently signed a contract for a new roof where the agreement mentions removing the existing roof; however, I was informed afterwards that I'd be charged extra because there were two layers of shingles on my roof. This additional charge wasn't mentioned in the contract at all, and I've never dealt with roofing before. Is it standard to charge more for this situation? Any advice would be super helpful!

It's pretty common to run into extra charges for removing multiple layers of shingles since it requires more labor and disposal fees. However, I'd expect that kind of thing to be mentioned upfront in the contract. It's a bit sketchy to spring that on you after the fact.
In most cases, contracts do have a clause about unforeseen conditions, which could cover this. However, they should have inspected the roof properly during the estimate. It's not fair to hit you with unexpected fees afterward, especially without prior notice.
That makes sense. I wish I had known before signing, though.
If the contract clearly states that they need to remove the old roof without mentioning extra charges for a second layer, I wouldn't pay it. It's their responsibility to notice that during the estimate. Maybe meet them halfway if you're happy otherwise, but don't just accept the extra charge without a fight.
Exactly! I feel like I should stand my ground on this one.

Yeah, not having that in writing feels really unfair. They should have caught that at the start!
