I recently bought a house from the 70s that has some beautiful custom cabinets, but I'm a bit worried about them. The kitchen cabinets are missing backs, so if you open them, you can see right through to the wall. I'm also noticing some noticeable gaps between the cabinets and the wall—both on the sides and the top. I'm confused about how they're actually attached to the wall too. Before I decide to pay someone to reface and paint them, is this normal? Is it safe, and what type of professional should I reach out to for help?

It sounds like you might have a similar setup to some older homes, where the cabinets are more like facades and not traditional cabinets. I've got a 1974 build myself. What I did when I found gaps was re-glue and nail any loose pieces back together, fill gaps with caulk, and then give them a fresh coat of paint. If you’re on a budget, that might be a good route instead of replacing everything!
