I just got an M12 drill set from Home Depot and while using it today to drill out a screw, it started smoking and made a popping sound on clutch setting 1. I only used it for about 3 minutes and the battery didn't feel warm at all. I'm worried about whether this is normal behavior or if I should return the drill. I definitely don't want this issue happening every time I need to use it!

I’d definitely recommend taking it back just to be on the safe side. It’s better to deal with a faulty tool now than risk it getting worse later.
Return it while you can! It’s always easier to handle warranty issues than to deal with a broken tool later, especially if it gets damaged and you can’t find the serial number.
This happened to me too! But don’t worry, just make sure to return it before it’s too late. If you’re considering upgrading to a brushless hammer drill, that might be a good move!
