Do I really need a permit for installing an EV charger?

I'm planning to run a 240 line for an EV charger in my garage and almost forgot to get a permit. I feel confident in my skills, especially since my sister, who is an electrician, will be helping to ensure everything is done correctly. However, I've read that permits involve a lot of annoying paperwork and can add costs to what seems like a simple project. I've previously done a similar project for an induction range with a permit, so I'm wondering if I should go through the hassle again. What do you all think?

Honestly, a lot of people bypass permits and just do the work. It’s your choice. I’m not here to judge! If you think you can handle it and your sister's got your back, then go for it!

If you skip the permit and something goes wrong, like a fire due to electrical issues, your insurance might deny your claim. So, even though it feels like extra hassle, having the work permitted is a good idea for coverage. Plus, it’ll probably just cost around $50, which isn't that bad compared to the peace of mind it provides. Your local council likely has a simple permit application process too.

Yeah, definitely worth considering! If you do it to code, then having that permit really won't be a big deal down the road.

Skipping permits is risky. You might save time now, but it's something that can come back to bite you when you least expect it. I'd get the permit.

You may want to consider your state's regulations and your insurance company’s policies. Some insurers are really strict and might inspect the property, while others are less involved. It's a gamble, but getting the permit can save you headaches if you decide to sell later on.
