Can I Rebuild a Lean-To Without a Permit?

I noticed that there's a lean-to listed on my property's auditor page, but it was torn down long before I bought the place. I'm curious if I can rebuild it without needing a permit, especially since it's less than 200 square feet. Would love to hear if anyone has experience with this!

It really depends on your local codes and how strict your code enforcement is. In my experience, most people don’t bother getting a permit for small sheds like this. Just double-check your local regulations first, though, because rules can vary quite a bit!

Thanks for the heads up! I’ll make sure to check my local rules.

Make sure to look up your local zoning laws. In my area, no permits are needed for structures under 400 square feet! I even avoided troubles with placement by using skids for my shed, so it wasn't fixed to the ground and didn't count as real property for taxes. Just call them for clarity, but it's wise to keep your identity private if you can.

Wow, under 400 square feet? That seems way more lenient than what I expected! Thanks for sharing!
