Hey everyone! I'm a total newbie looking for advice on installing solar panels on my roof. I own a rowhome in a small city and have a rooftop deck, which gives me access to the roof, although it limits the space available for installation. I estimate I have about 250-300 square feet to work with. I've asked several solar companies for quotes, but they all said it wouldn't be worth it since I wouldn't cover my electric bill completely. I don't mind about that; I'm just looking to make a dent in my electricity costs. I've heard my state has regulations that should require companies to at least provide a quote, but it seems like that hasn't worked out. I want to proceed with the installation myself, but I'm unsure where to start. I have some technical skills with computers and mechanical work, but I'm not particularly experienced with electrical systems. I'd appreciate any guidance on what I should study to get started, especially regarding having a backup battery or power station in case of outages.

Before diving in, it would help to gather more information about your situation. Can you share details like your location, electricity consumption, and the shape of your roof? Knowing where you live (city and state) and your average monthly kWh usage from your bills would also be important. Plus, let us know about any roof features, its orientation, and slope. This info is crucial for better advice!

Thanks for the quick response! I live in Baltimore, MD, and I estimate we use about 1100 kWh per month (mostly for three 500W computers and some lighting). My roof has a slight slope towards the back, doesn't have any protrusions, and faces east. I hope this helps!
