What’s the Deal with Using Human Urine as Fertilizer?

I have some fond memories from my childhood of my grandma keeping a barrel of what I later learned was urine, which she used to nurture her fruits and veggies. Recently, I've tried it out myself on my cherry tomatoes and had an incredible harvest! Urine is always on hand, free, and plentiful. I'm curious about everyone's thoughts on using your own urine for gardening. Has anyone tried it, and if not, what are your reasons?

I really like the concept, but I'm hesitant because of the meds I take. I wonder how they'd affect the plants if I used my urine. My boyfriend isn't thrilled about the idea either!

I grew up with a grandparent who used a lot of manure for gardening, so I see where you're coming from. Just peeing next to trees was a norm for us! I did mention urine in a class I taught about soils, and while I don't use it in the community garden, I think it's a great option for those short on cash for organic fertilizers.

Right? Going outside is a lot more practical, especially growing up in the country.

Urine has some great nutrients, especially nitrates, which is why folks in the composting community are all about it! If you’ve got a compost pile, just adding some urine can help it out a lot. It's definitely worth a shot if you're looking for natural ways to enhance your garden!

Yeah, just be cautious if you're using it in your compost. It really does wonders!
