I'm currently working on building an attached ADU that will be around 800 square feet and I'm planning to install solar panels in Southern California. I'm debating whether to opt for gas or electric appliances for essentials like central AC, water heater, stove, washer, and dryer. What do you all think is the best route to take?

I lean towards electric for the future! Think about electric options like mini splits for HVAC and heat pump water heaters. They’re becoming the norm, and induction stoves cook super well. Plus, gas stoves can emit off-gasses even when they’re off. Although installing gas plumbing is cheaper now, you might want to stick with electric, especially if you’re going for sustainability.
From my experience living in Northern California, electricity tends to be way pricier than gas – like four times more! Even with solar panels, we still rely on gas for heating and cooking. So, weighing costs, gas might be the better bet for now.

I like where you're coming from, but if cooking is a passion for the person living in the ADU, they might really want a gas stove for better temperature control.
