I just got my first house, and we inherited a big water filtration and softening system. The company that installed it mentioned we just need new filters and a reverse osmosis membrane for about $150. They claim the previous owners kept up with maintenance, so it seems like it's in good shape. However, a friend told me these systems might not be needed anymore since the city switched from hard well water to river water, which he says is easier to manage. I'm looking for an unbiased opinion on whether I should invest in keeping the filtration system or not. Would it be better to consult a plumber or the city water utility for a proper assessment?

Before you make any decisions, I’d recommend getting your water tested. This way, you'll know exactly what's in it. It's pretty important—without a test, you’re just guessing at whether the filtration system is necessary or not.
If you can, test it before and after the filtration system, then you can compare the results.

Should I test the water after the filters, then?
