Best Places to Buy Wildflower Seeds?

Hey everyone! My wife and I are excited to turn our vacant field into a flower paradise. We're especially interested in sewing wildflower seeds, but we're also thinking of adding some specific flowers later on. Our plan is to buy wildflower seeds and some flower starters from a local farm store, then harvest our seeds to keep the garden going year after year. However, a friend of mine mentioned that some stores sell altered seeds that won't grow properly – is there any truth to that? Where can we find good quality seeds?

Honestly, I wouldn’t stress too much about what your friend said. Most generic seed packets you pick up at your local hardware store should germinate just fine. It’s typically the pricey GMO seeds that don’t reproduce well that you need to watch out for.

If you're specifically looking for native plant species, you might want to check out companies like Agrecol, Prairie Moon, or Shooting Star. They offer quality native seeds that you can order online for your garden.

I’ve had great success with JL Hudson Seedsman. They focus on organic and heirloom seeds, and from my experience over the last 15 years, their seeds grow really well.

Keep in mind that native seeds usually prefer bare soil to germinate, so it’s better to start them in an area where you can keep an eye on them first, like your yard. Once they’re larger, transplant them to the field. Also, consider clearing some grass and weeds from the field while the seeds germinate. Most also need cold stratification, so you could put them in the fridge or just scatter them in the fall for better luck.
