Can I Use Cedar Fence Pickets Instead of 1×6 Boards for My Blackstone Griddle Table?

I'm planning to build a table for my Blackstone griddle and the design suggests using a lot of 1x6 boards for the siding, which costs around $12 each. I'm considering using cedar fence pickets instead since they're cheaper, but they're a bit thinner. Is it a good idea to go with the fence pickets, or should I stick to the more expensive boards?

You could totally use the fence pickets where it doesn't really matter, like for the sides, but I would recommend keeping the 1x6s under the grill for better heat resistance. Just makes sense to use the right materials where they're needed.

I don’t think there’s any major issue using fence pickets as long as you’re okay with a rough finish. If you have a planer, you can really smooth them out and get a decent look. Just remember to sift through the stack to pick the best boards. It might take some time, but it can save some cash!

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely check the quality before buying.

Honestly, I tried using cedar fence pickets once and they turned out pretty rough. They felt like they were freshly soaked and had a lot of knots. If you’re aiming for something sturdy and decent-looking, you might want to stick with quality lumber.
