Replacing Can Lights with Slim Lights: Need Help with Sizing

Hey folks,I'm assisting my sister in replacing her can recessed lights with slimmer options, but we've run into a bit of a problem—specifically, the cutout size is larger than expected. We spotted some fixture trims that might solve our issue, but I'm curious if there are slim lights available with a larger trim size. I may not be using the right terms in my search, so any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

There are replacement options for both 4" and 6" can lights. It’s important to double-check if your sister ordered the right size—sometimes from the ground, it can be tricky to tell the size differences. I'd recommend verifying that first.

Yep, she definitely got 6" lights and she's tested a couple of different brands, but they all have the same issue. Even tried a 7", but no luck fitting that one either.

You’ve got a few choices here to consider:

1. Look for slim lights that fit properly.

2. Use 'goof rings'—they're not the prettiest option, though.

3. Alternatively, you could cut out a 16" x 16" section of the drywall and install a new piece that fits the correct size.

Thanks for the options! I’m trying to figure out if I should be searching for the outer ring size that’s a bit larger, since I did try a 7" and it didn’t fit at all.
