Can I Grow Small Tomatoes Indoors in Winter Just Using Grow Lights?

I'm transplanting my summer tomatoes outdoors but I'm curious about growing smaller varieties, specifically determinate dwarf tomatoes like Orange Hat, indoors during the winter. Is it feasible to grow these types with only grow lights and no natural sunlight? I know larger tomato varieties typically require sunlight to thrive, but how do smaller cherry tomatoes fare in this situation?

I've had success growing various tomatoes through winter under lights, both hydroponically and in soil. Dwarf types like Red Robin or Tiny Tim are pretty easy to manage indoors. You can even push the limits with a good grow tent and lights. Just be aware, it can get pricey if you're going all-in on setup. I mean, I once grew zucchini in a closet and it was hilariously expensive! But yes, small determinate cherries are definitely doable without breaking the bank.

Loving the closet zucchini story! I might consider doing something wild like that. Thanks for the motivation!

Just a heads up, the term "grow lights" can mean a lot of different things. For optimal growth, especially for fruiting plants, you'd want a good spectrum of light, not just what you'd use for seedlings.

Got it! I just use white lights for seedlings but I've got some colored bulbs too—blue and red. Time to dive into some research!

Absolutely! I've been growing cherry tomatoes in my AeroGarden without any extra sunlight, just a bit of light from a north-facing window. They’re thriving! You can totally handle determinate dwarf varieties indoors, especially in a proper setup. It's all about the right light and care.

Nice! Have you noticed any differences in flavor or appearance compared to those grown outside?

I love growing micro tomatoes in the winter! They’re adorable and fit easily under standard grow lights, usually only reaching about a foot tall. I recommend checking out Victory Seeds for a variety of options. I'm growing Micro Tom, Tiny Tim, Orange Hat, and Rosy Finch and they’re doing great!
