Am I being taken advantage of by my carpet installers?

I recently had carpet installed, but I'm really questioning the quality of their work. First off, they used hot glue instead of proper carpet adhesive—shouldn't carpet adhesive be standard? Secondly, they did a waterfall installation on my stairs with three separate pieces instead of one continuous piece, and there's one section where I can see the tack strip because it's cut so poorly. They agreed to replace that piece, but they insisted that using three separate pieces is 'industry standard.' Lastly, they didn't put in a stair nose where the carpet meets the tile and said it should have been installed under the tile. However, I've seen plenty of options for stair noses that can be glued or screwed down. I'm really not happy with how they're speaking to me about this either. My husband is considering disputing the charge. What should I do?

Honestly, this doesn't sound like gaslighting; it sounds more like poor workmanship. They should have used proper carpet adhesive, not just hot glue. For stairs, a single piece is definitely preferable; seeing the tack strip is unacceptable! It seems like they're just trying to brush off their mistakes. You might want to look into consumer protection options or leave a review to warn others.

Did you order the carpet from a big retailer like Home Depot? Because typically, you're better off with a local flooring company for quality. As for your stairs, having several pieces can be fine, but they need to be installed properly, with all pieces laid in the same direction. Seeing tack strips is definitely a red flag. You’re right to push back on that stair nose issue too; that’s a standard part of the job!

No, I went with a local company hoping for better quality.
