I'm looking to replace my front door's existing doorknob and deadbolt with a lever handle and a smart lock. The issue is that the current holes in my door are only about 2.75 inches apart, which is closer than standard. Because of this, I'm worried that unless I choose a smart lock designed to fit an existing deadbolt, it won't work at all. I believe I can bore a new hole for the deadbolt and use the wood I extract as a plug for the old hole, especially since I'm repainting anyway. Are there any concerns or tips I should keep in mind when moving the deadbolt hole? Also, which is better for this job: wood glue or the Minwax wood filler I already have? My DIY experience includes patching drywall, mounting TVs, swapping out electrical boxes, and changing dishwasher vents.

You might be okay if you choose a lock that has some adjustability for the distance, but it sounds like you're describing a pretty tight fit. Moving the deadbolt hole could definitely work; just make sure to measure carefully so you don’t end up with a misalignment. As for the plug, wood glue would probably give you a stronger hold compared to filler, plus it’s better for structural integrity. Just clean up the edges where you bore the new hole for a seamless look!

Thanks for the tips! I’ll definitely prefer the wood glue for a sturdier fix.
