What’s a Good Alternative to Mineral Oil for Wood Cutting Boards and Utensils?

I've recently discovered that I have a sensitivity to mineral oil, as every time I touch it, my skin becomes itchy and irritated. I'm guessing it's because of the petroleum components. I've used mineral oil on my wooden utensils and cutting boards, so now I'm wondering if I need to throw them away due to the potential risks of ingesting whatever is causing my irritation. Can I safely remove the mineral oil from my items? If so, what's the best way to do that?

Sounds like you've got a sensitivity that's worth taking seriously. It's crucial to be careful with other hydrocarbons too. You might want to see a dermatologist for advice. As for your utensils, you can usually clean off the mineral oil with warm soapy water and a good scrubbing to reduce any residue. Just make sure they dry completely afterward to prevent any moisture damage.

Thanks for sharing that cleaning tip! I hope it works. I’m also curious if there are any other oils that might be safer.

Coconut oil could be a good substitute for mineral oil when treating your wood items. Just keep in mind that it can go rancid if not taken care of properly, so you’ll need to use it wisely.

I've heard that too! That's why some people steer clear of it. Maybe there are alternatives that last longer?
